Mabena Debuts Educational SEN Drama Skit Exploring Empathy, Communication, and Family Perspectives

Mabena has released a new educational drama skit that explores the everyday realities surrounding Special Educational Needs (SEN) families through honest storytelling and thoughtful dialogue. The production examines how communication, empathy, and understanding can shape relationships between SEN parents, relatives, and friends while encouraging meaningful reflection on perspectives that are often misunderstood.

Recognized for her background in music (Special Needs Child) and educational content centered on Special Educational Needs, Mabena continues to use creative storytelling to highlight important social conversations. The release also marks a significant personal milestone, serving as the first acting performance since studying drama at university. By combining educational insight with dramatic performance, the project presents an authentic portrayal of conversations experienced by many families navigating the challenges of Special Educational Needs.

The story centers on Eva, an SEN mother, and her friend Abby during a conversation that raises questions without offering predetermined answers. Was Eva overreacting after years of feeling unheard? Were the emotional demands of sleepless nights and continuous caregiving influencing her response? Did Abby unintentionally use the wrong words despite good intentions, or did her comments reveal a lack of understanding and empathy? Rather than assigning blame, the skit encourages audiences to consider each perspective and reflect on how everyday conversations can affect families living with ongoing emotional and practical challenges.

The educational production acknowledges that many friends and relatives genuinely care but may struggle to find the right words when supporting an SEN parent. Others may unintentionally dismiss concerns because they have never experienced similar circumstances. At the same time, the story recognizes that some individuals remain unwilling to understand the realities faced by SEN families, highlighting the importance of compassion, active listening, and greater awareness.

Designed as an educational resource rather than a judgment of any individual or group, the skit demonstrates how seemingly ordinary conversations can carry significant emotional weight for parents who often navigate complex responsibilities behind the scenes. By presenting multiple viewpoints with balance and authenticity, the production encourages broader discussions about communication, empathy, and mutual understanding.

The filming process embraced authenticity from beginning to end. Background noise, including sounds naturally present during production, became part of the finished project rather than an obstacle that interrupted filming. This creative decision reflects the realities experienced by many families and reinforces the production’s commitment to portraying everyday life honestly.

The release also reflects  Mabena‘s broader approach to personal wellbeing and creative work. Instead of maintaining a constant publishing schedule, content is shared intentionally, recognizing the importance of protecting personal peace while continuing to create educational resources when meaningful opportunities arise. The project demonstrates that consistent impact is measured by the value of conversations created rather than the frequency of online activity.

The production was made possible through the valued collaboration and support of:

  • Black Next Gen YouTube Project
  • Victoria Ventures
  • Joyous Cap Cake

Their contributions helped bring the educational vision to life while supporting a project focused on awareness, understanding, and meaningful conversation.

Through drama, education, and lived experience, the skit seeks to encourage greater empathy for families raising children with Special Educational Needs while inviting audiences to consider how understanding often begins with listening.

To SEN parents navigating one of life’s most demanding journeys, your resilience is seen, your dedication is valued, and your experiences matter.

To friends and family members who may have unintentionally caused hurt through unfamiliar words or misunderstanding, meaningful support often begins with a willingness to listen, learn, and reconnect.

To those who continue to overlook the challenges faced by SEN families, every conversation presents an opportunity to respond with greater empathy, compassion, and understanding.
